Hospitality scent marketing in New York
A hotel is judged in the first few seconds of arrival. Scent is part of that judgement, whether or not anyone plans it.

New York hotels ask a single building to do many things at once. A lobby works as a lounge, a meeting room, a check-in hall and a photograph. Corridors move guests between floors that were often built decades apart. Spas and amenity floors carry an entirely different mood from the street entrance twenty storeys below. A scent program gives all of it one recognisable thread.
Zent is a Brooklyn-based agency, so a hospitality survey is done in person. We look at how air actually moves through your property before recommending anything, because a hotel that pushes conditioned air hard through a tall lobby behaves very differently from a boutique property on a converted floorplate.
Spaces we scent
Hotel spaces we scent
Most hospitality programs start at arrival and extend only as far as it makes sense for the property.
- Lobbies and reception
- The anchor of the program, and usually the space where the signature scent is set at its clearest.
- Corridors and elevator lobbies
- Long, enclosed and often stale; even distribution matters more here than intensity.
- Elevators
- Small volumes that turn over constantly, so output is kept deliberately light.
- Spas and wellness floors
- Frequently given their own calmer scent rather than the lobby signature.
- Amenity floors, lounges and event spaces
- Rooms whose use changes by the hour and whose occupancy swings widely.
What to consider
What shapes a hotel program
The survey looks at the building, not the brand deck.
- Airflow and zoning
- Which air handler serves the lobby, and whether corridors sit on the same zone.
- Ceiling height
- Double-height lobbies dilute scent quickly; low corridors hold it.
- Foot traffic and dwell time
- Check-in queues linger, elevator lobbies do not.
- Guest sensitivity
- Sleeping floors and treatment rooms are treated more conservatively than public areas.
- Noise
- Quiet lounges and spas rule out anything audible near seating.
- Visible or hidden equipment
- Design-led properties usually want nothing visible in guest sightlines.
“8 in 10 people say that cleanliness is the main factor that influences their perception of a hotel's values.”
HVAC or standalone
HVAC or standalone for a hotel
Where a hotel has central air serving the lobby and public floors, HVAC scenting is the natural fit. Fragrance oil is converted into a dry micro-mist and carried through the ducts, so the scent arrives evenly from the existing supply grilles with no equipment in the guest sightline. There is no damage to the ventilation system, and the only maintenance is replacing the oil bottle when it is empty.
It works on cool, fan or heat settings, but the fan must be set to ON rather than AUTO so air keeps circulating between cooling or heating cycles. For a spa suite, a boutique property without central air, or a single event room that needs its own character, standalone diffusers cover the space independently.

Hotel scenting questions
Can we scent the lobby without scenting guest rooms?
Yes. Scenting is applied to the zones you choose. Most hotels start with the lobby and public areas and leave sleeping floors out of the program entirely, which is one of the things we confirm during the free site survey.
Should the spa smell the same as the lobby?
Not necessarily. Many properties run a signature scent in the lobby and corridors and a separate, calmer scent on the spa or wellness floor. Both can be drawn from our library or developed as a custom scent with renowned perfume designers.
What happens if the lobby starts to smell too strong?
Output is adjusted as part of ongoing service. Depending on your plan, that is handled on site or remotely, and our service plans include a guaranteed 24-hour response time with support by email or dedicated hotline.
